WHY WOOl for a diaper cover? In short, wool is
Self-cleansing: Wool is lanolin-rich. Lanolin is a popular ingredient in soapmaking. Lanolin’s constant presence in wool, along with the friction produced by vapor-swollen wool fibers, enables the wool to perpetually scrub itself clean. On those occasions when wool gets soiled with larger particles that can’t evaporate, the lanolin content makes it a breeze to rinse those deposits away. Breathable: Individual wool fibers are crimped, and this crimping creates thousands of microscopic chambers of trapped air. In conjunction with wicking away moist vapors, this trapped air enables the skin to breathe, keeping it warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. Many athletes are rediscovering this unique property of wool, and use wool year round as the ultimate technical base layer. Odor-resistant: Odors are caused by bacteria growing on the fibers. Because wool is anti-bacterial: no bacteria, no odor! Fire-retardant: One of the ways to identify an unknown fiber is the burn test. Among wool’s attributes is that it is difficult to light, and it extinguishes itself. Since most synthetics are petroleum based, well.. you figure it out. Who am I?Funny mamma is just me, a closet full of wool sweaters to upcycle, a handful of free diaper patterns, and 3 little kids to cloth diaper.
I have a 4 yr old who still sleeps in his wool pull ups, an almost 2 yr old who is still FULL time diaper wearing and a 3 month old who will be in diapers for a long time to come. I had no idea whatsoever of what I was doing when I started out. I made a lot of rookie mistakes but I learned a lot! I really wanted to make all my own cloth diapers because we had a really tight budget. I found some awesome website on how to make diapers from stuff around your house and from thrift stores. I found the Rita's Rump diaper pattern (pocket fitted) and fell in love with it, and a Katrina's soaker pattern for a wool cover over the top and I was set to go. My hubby was the only thing I had left to convice of the wonder of coth diapers. Ha ha ha! He has not come around to seeing the wonder I see, but he does support me the best he can. We made a deal that I make the diapers as trim as I can so the kids dont have a giant fluffy but and I can use cloth diapers. It's a pretty good deal. :) So after sewing a ton of wool covers for my kids and for my friends. I wanted to let other ladies try and see how amazing wool is without having to spend the entire cloth diaper budget on a single wool cover. I'd like to think of funny mamma as a tester program/way to relax for me at the end of each day filled with fussy destructive children. :) So all that to say funny mamma is here to help! :) |
