The birth of the wool insert, use and care too
I was desperate to extend the time between diaper changes so I started experimenting with different types of inserts. One that out preformed all the rest was a wool booster insert. It was made from upcycled wool material and they went under whatever inserts I was using. I made them as thin as I could so that it wouldn't add any extra bulk to my diapers. I found that I got an extra 45 minutes between diaper changes, so like 2 1/2 hours for my heavy wetter. I probably could get more time but I don't like the baby to sit in wet diapers too long.
Wool is antibacterial naturally and the lanolin in the wool neutralizes the urine into saltwater. Which is super cool because you only have to wash your inserts every 2 weeks or so.
To use the wool inserts simply place them under whatever inserts you currently use in your pocket diapers. When you change the diaper pull out the wool insert and hang to dry. It will be ready to use again when it's dry.
To wash the wool inserts throw them in the washer on delicate cold wash with a few drops of baby shampoo or you can hand wash them in a bucket of cold water. They only really need to be washed if they get poo on them or if they start smelling like urine when they are dry. When that happens it means the lanolin has been used up in the wool and it needs to be relanolized.
To lanolize you can buy commercial lanolin wash or you can make your own. What you will need is:
Pure Lanolin -- look for quality. (breastfeeding lanolin works great)
Baby Wash or Shampoo -- use something that you would use on your baby.
Essential Oils -- Essential oils are optional. Lavender, Eucalyptus and Cedar are bug repellent, helping to keep your covers safe from moths. Lavender is relaxing and often recommended for babies.

Directions to make the lanolin wash:
- Pour about 1 cup of hot water into a heat proof container, like a jar.
- Drop in 1/8 teaspoon of Pure Lanolin per cover being washed.
- Add 2-3 drops of Baby Wash.
- Add a few drops of Essential Oil, optional
- I shake the jar till the lanolin is dissolved. Some sites say only to stir it because the hot water cause a lot of pressure in the jar. So be careful.
